I am a huge proponent of being positive, and it has helped me become more successful professionally and personally. I don’t think being positive by itself will make you successful, you have to take action as well. When I say be positive, I don’t mean putting on a smile when you feel horrible inside or assuming everything will work without any effort. I am talking about feeling happy, feeling good and being positive about yourself while taking other steps to make yourself more successful.
This article is the fourth article in a series about becoming successful in life by changing your attitude and actions. I am writing these articles because an attitude change and personal coaching helped propel my life to a whole new level. It was not one thing I did that created success, but many techniques that when used together can produce amazing results. I have a real estate team of ten that help me sell over 200 homes a year and fix and flip 10-15 homes a year. I have a wonderful family and plenty of time to spend with them. With my attitude change, I was able to start this blog, which has been an amazing experience.
Why does being positive or feeling happy make you more successful?
The idea that positive thinking can create success has been around for thousands of years. Many people might know the idea of positive thinking creating success as the “law of attraction.” I wrote a detailed article on the history of the law of attraction here. The basic idea is: what you think and feel will be attracted back to you. You feel happy and happy things will be come into your life, you feel negative and negative things will be attracted back to you, etc.
Many people think the law of attraction is a load of hogwash, because the science behind the idea of positive thinking is not explained to most people. The science of positive thinking involves how our subconscious mind works and that our subconscious mind is much smarter than we are. Our subconscious can handle millions of tasks at once (like keeping us alive and tasks it has learned like walking), while our conscious mind can barely handle doing a couple of things at once.
We have to teach our subconscious mind what to do and what we want. Remember how hard it was to drive a car or ride a bike when you had never done it before? Once you learn how to ride a bike, you don’t have to think about it, you just do it. The subconscious treats our thoughts the same way. If we think we are a failure or can’t do something, our subconscious will think that way as well. On the other hand, if we are happy and think we are good at something, our subconscious will think that way as well. If our subconscious thinks we can do something, we have a better chance of doing it.
How will being positive improve your outlook and performance?
When we are happy and positive we perform better in our lives. If you are negative and thinking about all the things that can go wrong; you will find the things that are wrong and ignore what is going right. We all know people who find the negative in everything. Even the happiest situation is turned into a horrible day, because something very minor went wrong. Likewise, we know happy people who are always enthusiastic and excited about life. Even when things seem horribly wrong they are happy and looking forward to the future. It has been difficult for me to find contractors for my fix and flips, but I would rather have the problems of finding contractors than no properties to flip. The events that occur for each group of people are no different in level of good or bad, the difference comes from the person’s perspective and interpretation of what is good or bad.
When you are feeling positive and happy you are looking for positive and happy things in life. If you are looking for positive things, you will find them and likewise if you are looking for negative things you will find them. When you are happy and positive, you also tend to be more alert and open to opportunity. Opportunity is all around us, we just have to have the ability to see it and go after it.

Just being positive wont get you where you need to be
Being positive and happy is a great start, but it is not everything. I created this series of articles, because you can’t do one thing to be successful. You have to incorporate many habits and actions to become successful and happy. If you are happy all day long, but never set a goal, never take any action or educate yourself, you aren’t going to get very far. This is why many people do not see any results when they try to be positive. They are positive all day long sitting on their couch watching television.
Being positive and ignoring warning signs is not a good thing
I write about being positive a lot, and I have had some people comment that being positive about bad situations is a recipe for disaster. They are right! When I talk about being positive, I don’t mean thinking every situation will work out perfectly no matter what the facts tell you. I am talking about feeling positive about yourself, not assuming everything that happens will be positive. I like to hope for the best, but plan for the worst.
If you have a situation that is going bad or has already turned bad, you have to take action to make the situation better, it won’t fix itself. While you are fixing the situation, you can still feel good about yourself. Feeling positive is not about putting a mask over your eyes to hide bad situations, it does give you the confidence to handle bad situations and find solutions.
Being positive makes you more confident and willing to try new things
The biggest advantage of being positive is it makes you feel good about yourself. When you feel good about yourself, you have confidence and confidence allows you to try new ventures. Being really successful involves risk taking, getting out of your comfort zone and being able to act fast. Confidence makes all of those things possible, and confidence comes from being positive and feeling good about yourself.
Being positive does not always show on the outside
Many people who are successful show a very hard exterior. They don’t smile, they don’t laugh, but inside they are happy. Some people love showing a hard exterior and that makes them happy and positive. It’s not about what you show or pretend to be it is about how you feel.
Tips to be more positive
It is easy to be positive when things are going great, the hard part is when things are going bad. We all have things in our life occur that upset us or make us unhappy. The trick is to realize that we are feeling bad, then identify why we are feeling bad and do something to make us feel better. Many times just identifying why we feel bad will make us feel better. Sometimes we feel bad for the silliest or most minuscule things that don’t really matter. How can you feel better about yourself?
- Make a list of all the accomplishments you are proud of in your life. Most people are surprised at how much they have done. If you want to take it a step further, record this list and listen to it when you feel down.
- Listen to motivational CD’s or read a motivational book.
- Take some time off to do something fun like golf or spend time with your family. Even if you are super busy, it is important to have free time to do things you enjoy. That free time will make you feel better and might just give you the break you need to figure out how to be less busy or solve your current problems.
- Exercise or go for a walk.
- Notice how beautiful the world is around you. When I go for a drive I try to notice the tress, the color, the sky and it makes me feel great.
- Listen to your favorite songs.
- Call up friends of family who you like to talk to.
Feeling positive all the time will not make you successful by itself. You also have to take action, set goals, get out of your comfort zone and make things happen. For next week I plan to write an article on how I set goals and why goals may be the most important part of being successful.
